Study: What’s the best web survey software package?

CHECKBOX Survey comes out on top in comprehensive category study by Zen Internet

Survey Software Category Overview
The use of survey software has become much more widespread in recent years. High profile companies now prefer to purchase enterprise software to conduct comprehensive surveys for customer and employee feedback, rather than developing their own web survey solutions in-house.

As a result there is a wide range of survey software on the market, ranging from simple design packages to full service solutions that include design, implementation, analysis, results, and reporting. These packages come with a variety of designs and pricing structures: web server installations, online-based packages, enterprise or single user licenses, and finally subscription-based online surveys. In can be a daunting task to choose the right survey software for your needs.

About Zen Internet and the Survey Software Analysis
Established in 1995, and one of the first ISPs in the UK, Zen Internet provides a full range of high quality services to the home and business user. From the latest in high speed DSL Broadband Internet access and complete hosting packages to state-of-the-art Web site design and e-commerce solutions, Zen Internet has become one of the leading ISP providers in the UK.Zen Internet examined the merits and suitability of a selection of survey software packages (14 in total), initially through market research against a set of specific criteria based on functionality, user-friendliness, capability, price, licensing, and technology. The objective was to determine the most appropriate survey software package for developing surveys for a variety of different uses.

Additional criteria included the ability for the survey software to have:
No limits in terms of quantity of responses
Automated and manual administration
Extensive variety and formats of questions types and responses
Provide comprehensive reporting and results analysis (including live and periodic) that are intuitive and easy to follow
Create surveys that do not require much time and effort from the participant to complete

Results: CHECKBOX Survey software is #1

According to Zen’s report, CHECKBOX Survey was the clear and unanimous choice. With its extensive feature set, simplified interface, and comprehensive reporting functionality, CHECKBOX Survey received the highest score of all survey software packages tested. With a web server installation and operation via web browser, CHECKBOX Survey was ranked first in terms of ease of use and feature sets. Overall, Zen Internet found CHECKBOX Survey Enterprise to be the most cost effective and powerful survey solution available.

“The recommendation is Prezza Technologies’ CHECKBOX Survey. Paid survey sites — scam or legit?

Most paid web survey sites are scams — requiring you to pay a membership to see the list of offers. In many cases, the list of “offers” are expired or invalid, meaning that you’ve wasted your own money just to find out that there are no “paid surveys” to take.

Here are a list of three sites that we’ve heard are legit:

Survey Scout
Survey Locator
Surveys Paid.com

Please note that we are not affiliated with any of these sites nor do we offer paid for surveys on our web site.

Best-practices for web-based surveys

Prezza Technologies has a great article on best-practices for creating web-based surveys:

“When designing surveys for the web using any product in the Ultimate Survey suite of online survey software, there are several things to consider when designing surveys for the web compared to other mediums.Ultimate Survey Enterprise Product PageHere is our list of things that you should think about before designing your web survey:

1. Type of user and their internet abilityIs the user an expert or novice internet user? This will effect the speed at which the respondent answers the survey or form. Therefore, this should be taken into account when determining the complexity and length of each page of your online survey.

2. Bandwidth of the userSimilar to number 1, this should be used as a factor when considering the length and complexity of your online survey.

3. Number of questions per pageWhile paper form surveys can generally run the gamut in terms of length, computer (and specifically web) based surveys require more thought when it comes to this issue. Generally speaking, we recommend that each page have approximately 5 questions. In our testing, this has generally resulted in the least users that abort the survey and the most thorough answers/time spent on each question. Use pages in your online surveys to separate the questions in to logical sections.

4. General usability
When applying a style to your survey, consider the color scheme and font choice that you use. The web survey should be pleasing to the eye and easy for the respondent to read. Poor choice of color design, inconsistent fonts, and small font size can all lead to respondents aborting the survey. In addition, we recommend that you use our survey software’s column features when creating radio or checkbox questions with long lists of answers. This will greatly improve the responses that you receive from the survey respondents.Overall, these are the first steps in creating high quality web based surveys with our survey software. We believe that following a strict and consistent design process will greatly improve the quality of your surveys and the responses that you get from your respondents.”
